Abir Mukherjee is a British author of Indian heritage whose Captain Sam Wyndham crime fiction series, set in 1920s India during the British Raj, has won critical acclaim, bestseller status, and multiple awards. His novels combine gripping detective fiction with sharp historical insight and a wry, sometimes angry, exploration of... colonialism and its legacies. Born in 1974 in London to Bengali parents, Mukherjee grew up in the west of Scotland and studied at the London School of Economics. He worked in finance for over twenty years before turning to writing. A Rising Man (2016) was his debut, introducing Captain Sam Wyndham, a former Scotland Yard detective who arrives in Calcutta in 1919, and Sergeant Surendranath Banerjee, his Indian colleague, in a city seething with political unrest and the aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The series continued with A Necessary Evil, Smoke and Ashes, Death in the East, The Shadows of Men, The Burning Grounds, and further instalments. Mukherjee's novels work brilliantly as detective fiction — the mysteries are clever, the plotting tight, and the period detail immersive.
