Amrou Al-Kadhi

Amrou Al-Kadhi is a British-Iraqi writer, filmmaker, actor and drag performer. They were born in Iraq and grew up between the Middle East and Britain, navigating the intersections of Arab culture, queerness, Islam and Western society. They are the creator of the drag troupe Denim and are known for their bold, boundary-crossing creative work. Life as a Unicorn is their memoir, telling the story of growing up between cultures, coming out as queer in a conservative Muslim family and finding freedom through drag performance and creative expression. The book is funny, moving and defiantly joyful, celebrating the power of being unapologetically yourself in a world that tries to force you into categories. Available as both a book and an audiobook — narrated by Al-Kadhi themselves — Life as a Unicorn offers vibrant listening and reading for anyone who has ever felt like they didn't fit in and for anyone who appreciates a story about finding your own extraordinary way of being in the world.
