Andrea Camilleri was an Italian author, screenwriter, and director whose Inspector Montalbano series became one of the most successful and beloved crime fiction series in European literature. Born in Porto Empedocle, Sicily, in 1925, he studied at the Silvio D'Amico Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome and worked as a theatre, television, and film director and producer for decades before publishing his first novel at the age of fifty-three.
The Inspector Montalbano series, set in the fictional Sicilian town of Vigàta, follows the food-loving, sea-swimming, politically astute detective through cases that combine classic mystery plotting with sharp social satire and a deep love of Sicilian culture. The Age of Doubt continues the series. Camilleri published over a hundred books and the Montalbano series was adapted into a hugely popular Italian television series. He wrote in a distinctive blend of Italian and Sicilian dialect.
Camilleri died in 2019 at the age of ninety-three. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers Mediterranean crime fiction at its most irresistible — mysteries infused with sunlight, sea air, good food, and the wisdom of a writer who understood Sicily to its bones.
