Andrzej Sapkowski
Author
Andrzej Sapkowski is a Polish author best known as the creator of The Witcher — the fantasy series that has become one of the most famous fictional franchises in the world, spawning bestselling video games, a hit Netflix television series, and a passionate global fanbase. Born in Lodz, Poland in 1948, Sapkowski studied Economics at the... University of Lodz and worked as a sales representative for a foreign trade company before turning to writing. His first Witcher short story, "Wiedzmin" (The Witcher), was published in a Polish fantasy magazine in 1986 and won third place in a competition. It introduced Geralt of Rivia — a professional monster hunter, or witcher, in a morally complex medieval-inspired world — and the character quickly became enormously popular in Poland. The Witcher stories and novels, including The Last Wish, Sword of Destiny, Blood of Elves, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake, form a saga that follows Geralt, the sorceress Yennefer, and their adopted daughter Ciri through a world of war, politics, prophecy, and magic. Sapkowski's writing subverts traditional fantasy tropes — his monsters are sometimes sympathetic, his heroes are often morally ambiguous, and his fairy-tale inspirations are twisted into darker, more complex forms. The Witcher video games, developed by the Polish studio CD Projekt Red, brought the series to a massive international audience. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) is widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made. The Netflix series, starring Henry Cavill and later Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, has further expanded the franchise. Sapkowski's work has been translated into over thirty-seven languages and has sold millions of copies worldwide. He has won numerous awards, including the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement. The audiobook editions of the Witcher novels and stories have been widely praised, with narrators bringing Sapkowski's richly imagined world and complex characters to compelling life. The audiobooks are an excellent way to experience the original stories that launched the phenomenon. Andrzej Sapkowski lives in Poland. His books and audiobooks are essential for anyone who loves fantasy that is dark, intelligent, and morally complex — the stories that started it all. Read more Show less
