Ann Leckie is an American science fiction author whose debut novel Ancillary Justice was one of the most acclaimed and groundbreaking science fiction novels of the twenty-first century. Her work combines space opera's sweep and ambition with deep questions about identity, consciousness, gender, and the nature of personhood.
Leckie grew up in Toledo, Ohio and studied music and English. She worked in various jobs, including as a recording engineer, and attended the Clarion West Writers Workshop before publishing her first novel.
Ancillary Justice (2013) won an unprecedented sweep of science fiction's top prizes — the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and the BSFA Award, making Leckie the first author to win all four for a single novel. The book follows Breq, the last surviving fragment of a starship's artificial intelligence that once controlled thousands of bodies, now inhabiting a single human form and seeking revenge against the ruler of the vast Radch empire. The novel's use of a single pronoun for all characters, regardless of gender, was both a striking stylistic choice and a profound exploration of how language shapes perception.
Ancillary Sword (2014) and Ancillary Mercy (2015) completed the Imperial Radch trilogy. The Raven Tower (2019) was a standalone fantasy novel narrated by a god — another formally inventive and critically acclaimed work. Translation State (2023) returned to the Imperial Radch universe.
Leckie writes science fiction that is intellectually rigorous, emotionally resonant, and formally adventurous. Her worldbuilding is detailed and convincing, and her exploration of what it means to be a person — whether human, AI, or something in between — is among the most sophisticated in modern science fiction.
The audiobook editions of Leckie's novels are excellent, with narrators navigating the complexity and beauty of her prose. Her books and audiobooks are essential for science fiction readers who want their space opera smart, ambitious, and genuinely thought-provoking.
