Anne Rice was an American author of gothic fiction, religious literature, and erotica whose novels — particularly her Vampire Chronicles — transformed vampire fiction and became some of the most influential and commercially successful horror novels of the twentieth century. Born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien in New Orleans in 1941, Rice... grew up in the city that would become the atmospheric backdrop for much of her fiction. She studied at Texas Woman's University, San Francisco State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. Interview with the Vampire (1976) was her debut — a revolutionary novel that reimagined the vampire story from the monster's perspective, creating in Lestat de Lioncourt one of the most charismatic and complex characters in horror fiction. The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, and numerous sequels built the Vampire Chronicles into a global phenomenon. The Mayfair Witches trilogy, Angel Time, and other series expanded her supernatural universe. Interview with the Vampire was adapted into a major film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and more recently into a critically acclaimed television series. Rice's contribution was to bring literary ambition, psychological depth, and philosophical questioning to horror fiction. Her vampires are not mere monsters but complex beings grappling with immortality, morality, and desire. Rice died on 11 December 2021, aged eighty.
