Anthony Horowitz is one of the most versatile and prolific British writers working today, with a career spanning children's fiction, adult crime novels, television screenwriting, and much more. From the adrenaline-fuelled Alex Rider series to his ingenious Sherlock Holmes and James Bond novels, his work has reached audiences of all ages... around the world. Born in Stanmore, north-west London in 1955 into a wealthy family that later lost its fortune, Horowitz has spoken about a difficult childhood that fuelled his imagination and drive. He published his first novel at the age of twenty-three and has barely paused since, producing an astonishing body of work across multiple genres and formats. The Alex Rider series, launched with Stormbreaker in 2000, follows a teenage spy reluctantly recruited by MI6. The books have sold over twenty million copies worldwide and been translated into dozens of languages, making them one of the most popular children's series of the twenty-first century. They have been praised for their pace, wit, and ability to engage reluctant readers — and the audiobook editions are a particular hit with young listeners. In adult fiction, Horowitz has carved out a remarkable niche writing authorised continuations of beloved characters. The House of Silk and Moriarty are official Sherlock Holmes novels approved by the Conan Doyle Estate, while Trigger Mortis and Forever and a Day are authorised James Bond novels. He has also written the highly acclaimed Hawthorne and Horowitz mystery series, in which he casts a fictionalised version of himself as the Watson to a former detective's Holmes — a postmodern twist on the classic detective duo. As a screenwriter, Horowitz created the award-winning ITV drama Foyle's War and has written for Midsomer Murders, Poirot, and many other programmes.
