Auguste Groner was an Austrian author and one of the earliest writers of detective fiction in the German language. Writing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, she created the detective character Joseph Muller, a quietly brilliant investigator whose cases anticipated many of the conventions that would later define the genre. The Case of the Lamp That Went Out is one of her Joseph Muller mysteries, featuring a carefully constructed puzzle, atmospheric settings, and the methodical detective work that characterised her fiction. Groner's writing combines the intellectual pleasures of classic detective fiction with a keen sense of period and place. Though less well known in English-speaking countries than her contemporaries, Groner was a pioneering figure in crime fiction whose work helped establish the detective genre in the German-speaking world. Her stories have been rediscovered by modern readers and recognised for their craftsmanship and historical importance. The Case of the Lamp That Went Out is available as an audiobook alongside the print edition, giving listeners an entertaining way to discover one of the early masters of detective fiction.
