Becky Chambers
Author
Becky Chambers is an American science fiction author whose warm, thoughtful, and character-driven novels have redefined what space opera can be. Her books are set in vast, richly imagined futures but focus on the intimate human (and alien) experiences within them — friendship, identity, belonging, and the search for meaning in an... enormous universe. Born in Southern California in 1985, Chambers grew up in a household that encouraged her interest in science and storytelling. She studied Performing Arts at the Edinburgh Festival and Theatre Arts at the University of Iceland before turning to writing. Her debut novel, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, was initially self-published through a Kickstarter campaign in 2014. The novel — about the diverse crew of a tunnelling ship that builds hyperspace lanes — was a word-of-mouth sensation and was picked up by a major publisher. It earned her a Hugo Award nomination and introduced readers to a new kind of science fiction. The Wayfarers series — comprising The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, A Closed and Common Orbit, Record of a Spaceborn Few, and The Galaxy, and the Ground Within — is set in a fictional Galactic Commons where dozens of alien species coexist. The books are notably gentle and hopeful, exploring themes of community, found family, and cross-cultural understanding without relying on the violence, warfare, and conflict that dominate much space opera. Chambers has also written the Monk and Robot series — A Psalm for the Wild-Built and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy — novellas set in a world where robots gained sentience and left human society, and a monk ventures into the wilderness to rediscover what was lost. A Psalm for the Wild-Built won the Hugo Award for Best Novella. Her writing has been praised for its empathy, its optimism, and its ability to imagine futures that are diverse, kind, and genuinely interesting — without being naive or simplistic. The audiobook editions of Chambers's novels are excellent, with narrators capturing the warmth and diversity of her characters and settings. The audiobooks are a comforting and thought-provoking listening experience. Becky Chambers lives in Northern California. Her books and audiobooks are essential for anyone who wants science fiction that proves you can explore the grandest questions about existence while never losing sight of the people — and beings — who make it meaningful.
