Charles Maturin (1780–1824) was an Irish novelist and playwright who is one of the most important figures in Gothic literature. An Anglican clergyman in Dublin, he wrote novels of extraordinary psychological intensity and dark imagination that pushed the Gothic genre to its extremes.
Melmoth the Wanderer is his masterpiece — a sprawling, labyrinthine novel about a man who has sold his soul and wanders the earth seeking someone to take over his bargain. Published in 1820, it influenced writers from Balzac to Wilde and remains one of the greatest works of Gothic fiction ever written.
His audiobooks and books are essential listening for fans of Gothic literature and anyone who enjoys fiction that is dark, ambitious and utterly unforgettable.
