Clive Cussler was an American adventure novelist and marine archaeologist whose books have sold over a hundred million copies worldwide and who founded the real-life National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) to discover and preserve maritime heritage. He was the master of the modern adventure thriller. Born in Aurora, Illinois in... 1931, Cussler grew up in Alhambra, California and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, working as an aircraft mechanic and flight engineer. He worked in advertising before turning to writing. Raise the Titanic! (1976) was his early breakthrough, but the Dirk Pitt series — beginning with Pacific Vortex! and spanning over twenty-five novels including Sahara, Inca Gold, Atlantis Found, Arctic Drift, and many more — made him one of the bestselling novelists of all time. Dirk Pitt is an underwater adventurer and marine engineer who works for NUMA, discovering shipwrecks, lost treasures, and ancient mysteries while battling villains on a global scale. Cussler also created the Kurt Austin/NUMA Files series, the Isaac Bell historical adventure series, the Oregon Files series, and the Fargo Adventures series, many co-written with other authors. In real life, Cussler founded NUMA as a non-profit organisation and personally led expeditions that discovered over sixty significant shipwrecks, including the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley.
