Deborah Levy is a British-South African author, playwright, and poet whose formally elegant, intellectually rigorous fiction and memoir have established her as one of the most important writers in contemporary British literature.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1959, Levy grew up under apartheid — her father was imprisoned by the regime for his involvement in the African National Congress. The family moved to England when she was nine. She studied theatre at Dartington College of Arts and has written plays, poetry, and fiction.
Swimming Home (2011) was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize — a psychologically intense, formally controlled novel set at a villa in the south of France where a depressed poet's family holiday is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious young woman. Hot Milk, The Man Who Saw Everything, and August Blue continue her exploration of desire, identity, displacement, and the complex inner lives of women navigating a world that often fails to see them clearly.
Her Living Autobiography trilogy — Things I Don't Want to Know, The Cost of Living, and Real Estate — is a genre-defying blend of memoir, essay, and literary criticism that examines what it means to be a woman, a writer, and a citizen of the world. The trilogy has been widely praised as one of the finest works of autobiographical writing in recent years.
Levy writes with precision, intelligence, and a fearless engagement with ideas.
The audiobook editions of Levy's works are elegant and thought-provoking. Her books and audiobooks are essential for readers who love literary fiction, innovative memoir, and writing of the highest intellectual and artistic ambition.
