Dee Brown (1908–2002) was an American historian and novelist best known for Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, his landmark account of the systematic destruction of Native American communities in the nineteenth century. Published in 1970, the book became a bestseller and fundamentally changed how many Americans understood the history of westward expansion. Brown worked as a librarian and professor while writing more than thirty books on the American West, bringing meticulous research and a compassionate perspective to stories that had long been marginalised. His audiobooks and books remain essential reading and listening for anyone seeking to understand American history from the perspective of its Indigenous peoples.
