Denise Mina is a Scottish crime writer, graphic novelist, and broadcaster whose dark, socially engaged fiction has made her one of the most important voices in British crime writing. Born in Glasgow in 1966, she grew up in several countries before returning to Scotland, where she studied Law and researched the diminished responsibility defence for her PhD โ research that informed her fiction.
Mina's novels include the Garnethill trilogy, the Paddy Meehan series, the Alex Morrow series, and standalones including The Less Dead, Conviction, and Rizzio. Blood, Salt, Water is an Alex Morrow novel following the Glaswegian detective as she investigates a case on the atmospheric west coast of Scotland. Her fiction is characterised by its sharp social observation, its dark wit, and its engagement with inequality, poverty, and the systems that perpetuate them.
She has won the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award and has written graphic novels including an adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Her audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers crime fiction with a fierce social conscience โ dark, witty, and unmistakably Scottish.
