Derek Landy is an Irish author and screenwriter who created the Skulduggery Pleasant series, one of the most popular, inventive, and brilliantly funny fantasy series for young readers of the twenty-first century. His books combine fast-paced action, dark humour, and a skeleton detective to create something genuinely unique in children's... fiction. Born in Ireland, Landy studied Media Arts and worked as a screenwriter — he wrote the Irish film Dead Bodies (2003) — before turning to children's fiction. Skulduggery Pleasant (2007) introduced the character of Skulduggery Pleasant — a wise-cracking, impeccably dressed, living skeleton who works as a detective and sorcerer. Alongside his partner, the teenager Stephanie Edgley (who takes the name Valkyrie Cain), he battles an array of magical villains, apocalyptic threats, and the forces of darkness, all while delivering the sharpest, funniest dialogue in children's fiction. The series ran to fifteen novels and multiple short stories, spanning over a decade and growing in darkness and complexity as its readers grew up. The Faceless Ones and other early entries established the series's tone, while later books tackled genuinely dark themes — moral ambiguity, power, corruption, and the cost of heroism — without ever losing the wit and energy that made the series a phenomenon. Landy writes with a screenwriter's instinct for pace, dialogue, and visual storytelling.
