Donald Hamilton was an American author best known for creating Matt Helm, the protagonist of a long-running series of spy thrillers that became one of the most popular espionage franchises of the Cold War era. His novel The Ambushers is one of the Matt Helm adventures, featuring the government assassin navigating the dangerous world of... Cold War espionage. Hamilton's Helm novels were grittier and more morally complex than many of their contemporaries, presenting a protagonist who was a professional killer rather than a suave gentleman spy. The series ran from 1960 to 1993, spanning twenty-seven novels. Several were adapted into films starring Dean Martin, though the films took a far lighter tone than Hamilton's hard-edged originals. Born in Sweden in 1916, Hamilton emigrated to the United States as a child and also wrote Western fiction and outdoor adventure stories. He was an accomplished outdoorsman and his knowledge of weapons, wilderness and field craft added authenticity to his thrillers. Hamilton died in 2006.
