E.J. Hobsbawm was a British historian who was one of the most influential historians of the twentieth century. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1917, to a British father and Austrian mother, he studied at Cambridge and taught at Birkbeck, University of London, for decades. The Age of Capital: 1848-1875 is the second volume of his... magisterial four-part history of the modern world, covering the period when industrial capitalism transformed European society. The series also includes The Age of Revolution, The Age of Empire, and The Age of Extremes. Hobsbawm's Marxist perspective and his gift for synthesis made him one of the most widely read historians in the world. Hobsbawm died in 2012.
