E. Phillips Oppenheim was a prolific English novelist who was one of the most popular and successful writers of thriller and espionage fiction in the early twentieth century. Born in 1866, he published over one hundred novels and numerous short stories during a career that spanned more than fifty years, earning him the title Prince of Storytellers. An Amiable Charlatan is a witty and entertaining novel featuring the kind of charming rogues, international intrigue and elegant settings that made Oppenheim's fiction hugely popular with readers on both sides of the Atlantic. His work helped establish many of the conventions of the spy thriller and international intrigue genres that writers like Ian Fleming and John le Carrรฉ would later develop. Oppenheim's novels were bestsellers in their day and were widely adapted for film and stage. His audiobooks and books offer contemporary readers a window into the golden age of popular thriller fiction. He died in 1946.
