Erskine Childers (1870–1922) was an Anglo-Irish writer and political activist best known for The Riddle of the Sands, published in 1903 and widely considered the first modern spy novel. The book tells the story of two young Englishmen who stumble upon a German invasion plot while sailing in the Baltic Sea, combining thrilling espionage with vivid descriptions of small-boat sailing. Childers drew on his own sailing experience to create a remarkably authentic and atmospheric adventure. He later became deeply involved in Irish nationalist politics and was executed during the Irish Civil War. His audiobooks and books remain landmark works for fans of espionage fiction and sailing literature.
