F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American novelist and short story writer whose elegant, incisive fiction defined the Jazz Age and produced some of the finest prose in American literature. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1896, he attended Princeton University (though he did not graduate) and served briefly in the army before publishing his... debut novel, This Side of Paradise, at twenty-three, which made him famous overnight. Fitzgerald's masterpiece, The Great Gatsby, is considered one of the greatest American novels ever written — a slim, perfect novel about wealth, love, class, and the corruption of the American Dream. His other novels include The Beautiful and Damned, Tender Is the Night, and the unfinished The Last Tycoon. He and his wife Zelda became the golden couple of the 1920s, living glamorously and destructively. Fitzgerald died in Hollywood in 1940 at the age of forty-four.
