Flann O'Brien was the pen name of Brian O'Nolan, an Irish novelist, playwright, and satirist who is one of the most original and influential writers in Irish literature. Born in 1911, he also wrote a famous Irish Times column under the name Myles na gCopaleen. The Third Policeman is his masterpiece — a surreal, darkly comic novel about... a narrator who murders a man for his money and then enters a nightmarish world of impossible bicycles, omnium, and police who are obsessed with the atomic theory of cycling. The novel was rejected by publishers in O'Brien's lifetime and published posthumously. O'Brien died in 1966.
