Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of the greatest novelists in world literature, whose psychological depth and philosophical complexity have influenced writers, thinkers, and artists for over a century. Born in Moscow in 1821, he studied at the Military Engineering-Technical University in Saint Petersburg before pursuing a literary career. His early life was marked by tragedy — his father was murdered, and Dostoevsky himself was arrested for participation in a political discussion group, sentenced to death, and reprieved by firing squad at the last moment, spending four years in a Siberian prison camp. These experiences profoundly shaped his writing. His major novels — Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov — explore the extremes of human consciousness, the nature of free will, faith, suffering, and moral responsibility. He pioneered the psychological novel, creating characters of such depth and contradiction that Freud and Nietzsche both acknowledged his influence. His shorter works, including Notes from Underground and A Christmas Tree and a Wedding, demonstrate the same penetrating insight into human nature. Dostoevsky's audiobooks and books continue to challenge and transform readers and listeners worldwide. His work has been translated into over 170 languages, and his influence extends far beyond literature into philosophy, psychology, theology, and political thought. He remains as essential and provocative today as he was in nineteenth-century Russia.
