Gregg Hurwitz is an American thriller writer and screenwriter whose novels combine breakneck plotting, meticulous research, and morally complex protagonists. The Orphan X series, beginning with Orphan X (2016), follows Evan Smoak, who was taken from a children's home as a boy and trained as part of a secret government programme to become a lethal black-ops agent. After leaving the programme, he reinvents himself as "the Nowhere Man" — someone who helps people in desperate situations, reachable only through a specific phone number passed from one person to the next.
