J.L. Carr was a British novelist, publisher, and primary school headmaster whose slim, perfectly crafted novels have achieved a devoted cult following. Born in Thirsk, Yorkshire, in 1912, he ran his own small press and taught in village schools for most of his life.
A Month in the Country follows a shell-shocked First World War veteran who takes a summer job restoring a medieval wall painting in a Yorkshire church and slowly comes back to life. The novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful short novels in the English language. The Harpole Report is a comic novel about a primary school headmaster.
Carr died in 1994. His audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers exquisite, perfectly crafted English fiction — novels so beautiful they can break your heart in under two hundred pages.
