Jack Higgins was the principal pen name of Harry Patterson, one of the bestselling thriller writers of all time, whose novels sold over 250 million copies worldwide. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1929, he grew up in Belfast during the Troubles — an experience that later informed many of his novels. He studied Sociology and Social... Psychology at the London School of Economics and worked as a teacher and lecturer before becoming a full-time writer. Higgins published over eighty novels under various pseudonyms before achieving global fame with The Eagle Has Landed in 1975, a thriller about a German plot to kidnap Winston Churchill that sold over fifty million copies. He followed it with dozens more bestselling thrillers, including Angel of Death, A Fine Night for Dying, and the Sean Dillon series. His novels typically feature military action, political intrigue, and characters operating in morally grey areas. Higgins died in 2022 at the age of ninety-two.
