James Joyce

James Joyce was an Irish novelist, short story writer, and poet who is one of the most important and influential writers of the twentieth century. His radical experiments with language, narrative structure, and the representation of consciousness changed the possibilities of the novel and influenced virtually every major writer who followed. Born in Dublin in 1882, Joyce was educated at Jesuit schools and University College Dublin. He left Ireland in 1904 with Nora Barnacle, who would become his lifelong partner and eventual wife, and spent most of his adult life on the European continent — in Trieste, Zurich, and Paris — though Dublin remained the setting of virtually all his fiction. Dubliners (1914), a collection of short stories about the people of Dublin, established his gift for precise observation and the technique he called the "epiphany" — a moment of sudden revelation. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), a semi-autobiographical novel about the intellectual and artistic awakening of Stephen Dedalus, pushed the boundaries of narrative voice. Ulysses (1922) is his masterpiece — a novel that follows Leopold Bloom, Stephen Dedalus, and Molly Bloom through a single day in Dublin, 16 June 1904, reimagining Homer's Odyssey in a modern urban setting. The novel's formal experimentation, its range of styles, its humour, its humanity, and its linguistic virtuosity make it one of the greatest and most challenging novels ever written. Finnegans Wake (1939) pushed language itself to its limits, creating a dream-language that draws on dozens of languages and defies conventional reading. Joyce died in Zurich in 1941. The audiobook editions of Joyce's works are revelatory — his prose, particularly Ulysses, comes alive when read aloud. His books and audiobooks are essential — the work of a writer who remade the English language.
