James Patterson is the most commercially successful author in the world, with over 400 million books sold globally — a figure that places him in the rarefest company of bestselling writers in publishing history. His output is staggering, his range is vast, and his ability to create addictive, fast-paced fiction across multiple genres is... unmatched. Born in Newburgh, New York in 1947, Patterson studied English at Manhattan College and earned a master's degree from Vanderbilt University. He worked in advertising at J. Walter Thompson, eventually becoming chairman of the agency's North American operations — a career that taught him how to communicate with audiences and how to build brands, skills he has applied to his publishing career with extraordinary success.
