John Clare (1793–1864) was an English poet celebrated as one of the finest nature poets in the English language. Born into rural poverty in Northamptonshire, Clare wrote with intimate, loving detail about the English countryside, its wildlife and the changing seasons. His poetry fell into obscurity during his lifetime — he spent his final decades in an asylum — but has since been recognised as a masterpiece of Romantic literature. Audiobook collections of his work, including The Great Poets series, bring his vivid, deeply felt verse to modern listeners.
