John Lukacs was a Hungarian-American historian and author widely regarded as one of the most distinguished historians of the twentieth century. His book A Short History of the Twentieth Century offers a masterful, concise account of the major events, trends and turning points that shaped the modern world. Lukacs was born in Budapest in... 1924 and emigrated to the United States after World War II, where he spent most of his academic career at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. He wrote more than thirty books on history, historiography and historical philosophy, with particular expertise in World War II, the Cold War and the intellectual history of the modern era. His work on Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler was especially acclaimed, offering nuanced portraits of these defining figures. Lukacs was known for his elegant prose, his commitment to narrative history over social science approaches, and his insistence on the importance of historical consciousness.
