John Prebble was a Canadian-born British journalist, novelist, and popular historian celebrated for his vivid, deeply researched accounts of Scottish history. Born in 1915, he became one of the most important writers on Highland history, with landmark works including The Highland Clearances, Culloden, and Glencoe. The High Girders tells the dramatic story of the Tay Bridge disaster of 1879, when a railway bridge collapsed during a storm, sending a train and its passengers into the freezing waters below. Prebble's narrative non-fiction combines meticulous research with gripping storytelling. He died in 2001. His audiobooks and books remain essential reading and listening for anyone interested in Scottish and British history.
