John Steinbeck was an American author whose novels and short stories about working-class Americans, migrant labourers, and the dispossessed of the Great Depression era are among the most powerful and enduring works of twentieth-century literature. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962.
Born in Salinas, California in 1902, Steinbeck grew up in the agricultural Salinas Valley — "the salad bowl of the nation" — a landscape and community that would provide the setting for his greatest fiction. He studied English Literature intermittently at Stanford University but never graduated, instead working as a manual labourer, journalist, and caretaker while writing.
Of Mice and Men (1937) — the story of George and Lennie, two displaced migrant workers during the Depression — was his first major success, becoming both a bestselling novel and a hit Broadway play. The Grapes of Wrath (1939) was his masterpiece — an epic novel following the Joad family from their drought-devastated Oklahoma farm to the promised land of California, where they find exploitation and injustice instead of opportunity. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize and remains one of the most important American novels ever written.
East of Eden (1952) was his most ambitious work — a multi-generational saga set in the Salinas Valley that retold the story of Cain and Abel. Other major works include Tortilla Flat, Cannery Row, The Pearl, The Winter of Our Discontent, and Travels with Charley, his account of a road trip across America with his poodle.
Steinbeck died in New York City in 1968. His compassion for ordinary people, his vivid sense of place, and his belief in human dignity have kept his work alive for generations of readers.
The audiobook editions of Steinbeck's novels are outstanding, with narrators capturing the humanity, the landscape, and the moral power of his prose. His books and audiobooks are essential — American literature at its most compassionate and enduring.
