Jonathan Raban (1942–2023) was a British-born author, travel writer, and literary critic widely regarded as one of the finest prose stylists of his generation. Born in Norfolk, he studied at the University of Hull before establishing himself as a writer in London, eventually settling in Seattle, where he lived for much of his later life.
Bad Land: An American Romance, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, is a masterful exploration of the American West, tracing the stories of homesteaders who were lured to the Montana prairies in the early twentieth century by railroad company propaganda promising fertile land. Raban combines historical research, landscape writing, and personal observation to create a deeply layered portrait of ambition, disappointment, and the enduring mythology of the American frontier.
Raban's other celebrated works include Coasting, Old Glory, and Passage to Juneau. His writing is characterised by intellectual depth, elegant prose, and a keen eye for the relationship between landscape and human character. His audiobooks and books remain essential reading for anyone who appreciates travel writing at its most literary and thought-provoking.
