Joseph Conrad was one of the greatest novelists in the English language, a Polish-British writer whose explorations of human nature, colonialism, and moral complexity have influenced generations of authors. Born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857 in what is now Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire), he was orphaned young and... raised by his uncle. He joined the French merchant navy at sixteen and later the British merchant marine, spending twenty years at sea before settling in England and becoming a full-time writer. Conrad did not begin writing in English — his third language after Polish and French — until his mid-thirties, yet he produced some of the most celebrated prose in the language. His major works include Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent, and Under Western Eyes. His shorter works, including A Personal Record (an autobiographical memoir of his writing life), reveal the man behind the fiction — his philosophical outlook, his understanding of human frailty, and his deep engagement with questions of duty, honour, and betrayal. Conrad died in 1924 but his influence endures.
