Joshua Whitehead is a Two-Spirit, Oji-nêhiyaw (Ojibwe-Cree) author from Peguis First Nation in Manitoba, Canada. They are a poet, novelist, and academic whose work centres Indigenous identity, sexuality, queerness, and the reclamation of Indigenous storytelling traditions.
Jonny Appleseed, Whitehead's debut novel, tells the story of a Two-Spirit Indigiqueer young man navigating life between his home reserve and the city of Winnipeg. The novel is raw, funny, tender, and unflinching in its portrayal of Indigenous life, love, and resilience. It was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and won the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction.
Whitehead's audiobook and book versions of Jonny Appleseed offer listeners and readers a powerful, contemporary Indigenous voice that challenges colonial narratives while celebrating the complexity and beauty of Two-Spirit identity. Whitehead is also the editor of Love After the End, an anthology of Two-Spirit speculative fiction.
