Kate Chopin was an American author of short stories and novels, now recognised as one of the most important writers of nineteenth-century American literature. Born in St. Louis in 1850, she lived in Louisiana and drew on Creole and Cajun culture for much of her fiction. Her novel The Awakening, published in 1899, was considered scandalous for its frank portrayal of female desire and independence. At Fault, her first novel published in 1890, explores themes of divorce, morality, and social convention in post-Civil War Louisiana. Chopin died in 1904. Her audiobooks and books continue to be widely read and listened to by those who appreciate pioneering American literature and early feminist fiction.
