Kiran Millwood Hargrave is a British author and poet whose award-winning books for children and adults draw on myth, history, and landscape to create stories of rare beauty and emotional power. Born in London in 1990, she studied English at Cambridge University and completed an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
Hargrave's debut novel The Girl of Ink & Stars won the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year in 2017, establishing her as a major new voice in children's literature. Her subsequent children's novels include The Way Past Winter, The Island at the End of Everything, and A Secret of Birds and Bone, all praised for their lyrical prose and imaginative world-building. She has also published poetry collections and illustrated books.
Her first novel for adults, The Mercies, based on the true story of a seventeenth-century witch trial in northern Norway, was a Sunday Times bestseller and cemented her reputation as a storyteller who works brilliantly across age groups. Her audiobooks and books offer listeners and readers of all ages stories that are atmospheric, deeply felt, and illuminated by a poet's attention to language.
