Laura Dockrill is a British author, illustrator, poet, and performer whose work spans children's fiction, young adult novels, poetry, memoir, and spoken word — making her one of the most creatively versatile voices in British literature.
Born in Brixton, London in 1985, Dockrill grew up in a creative family — her mother is the author and illustrator Binny Dockrill, and her brother is the musician and producer Hugo White of The Maccabees. She studied at the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology and was named one of the ten best spoken word artists in the UK.
Her children's books — including the Darcy Burdock series and the Angry Cookie picture books — are inventive, funny, and beautifully voiced. Big Bones is a young adult novel that challenges body image expectations with warmth and humour. I Love You, I Love You, I Love You is a poetry and prose collection that captures the intensity and vulnerability of love with Dockrill's characteristic emotional honesty and linguistic flair.
What Have I Done? (2020), her memoir about her experience of postpartum psychosis, is raw, brave, and vitally important — a book that broke taboos about maternal mental health and offered solidarity to other parents experiencing similar crises.
Dockrill's work is characterised by energy, emotional honesty, and an infectious love of language and performance.
The audiobook editions of Dockrill's books, often narrated by the author, capture her warmth and performance energy. Her books and audiobooks are perfect for fans of poetry, children's fiction, and fearlessly honest writing about life and love.
