Laurence Sterne was an Irish-born English novelist and Anglican clergyman whose novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, published in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767, is one of the most inventive and influential works in the history of English literature. The novel is celebrated for its wildly digressive narrative... style, typographical experiments, and playful subversion of literary conventions. Sterne's wit, humour, and formal audacity anticipated modernist and postmodernist fiction by two centuries. He also wrote A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. Sterne died in 1768.
