Lucy Steeds is a British novelist whose debut novel announced a distinctive new literary voice — atmospheric, psychologically acute, and deeply immersed in the world of art.
Steeds graduated with a first-class degree in English Literature from Jesus College, Oxford, and completed a Master of Arts in World Literatures. She is a graduate of the Faber Academy and the London Library Emerging Writers Programme, and was inspired by her time living in France and her love of art history.
The Artist (2025), her debut historical novel, is set in 1920s Provence and follows three characters: an English aspiring journalist, a reclusive artist, and the artist's niece, whose lives become entangled in a psychodrama of art, ambition, and hidden desires. The novel won the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize and Waterstones Book of the Year, and was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction — remarkable achievements for a first novel.
Steeds writes with painterly precision — her prose is richly sensory, her pacing is controlled, and her psychological insight is sharp. She captures the textures of 1920s France, the intensity of artistic obsession, and the complex power dynamics between her characters with confidence and skill.
The audiobook edition of The Artist is a beautifully atmospheric listen — the evocative setting and psychological tension translate wonderfully to audio. Steeds's books and audiobooks are perfect for fans of historical literary fiction, art-world novels, and debut writers with genuine distinction.
