M.R. Carey is a British author and screenwriter best known for his novel The Girl with All the Gifts, which became a critical and commercial sensation and was adapted into a feature film. Writing under his full name Mike Carey, he has also had a distinguished career in comics and graphic novels, including acclaimed runs on Lucifer,... Hellblazer, and X-Men. Born Michael Richard Carey in Liverpool in 1959, he studied English at Oxford and worked as a teacher before pursuing writing. His career in comics established him as one of the most respected writers in the medium — his Lucifer series (a spin-off from Neil Gaiman's Sandman) ran for seventy-five issues and is considered one of the finest long-form comic narratives of its era. He also wrote extensively for DC and Marvel, including notable runs on Hellblazer, X-Men: Legacy, and The Unwritten. The Girl with All the Gifts (2014), published under the name M.R. Carey, was a post-apocalyptic novel that reinvented the zombie genre through the perspective of Melanie, a brilliant, curious child who is not what she seems. The novel was praised for its emotional depth, its scientific plausibility, and its willingness to challenge genre conventions. The 2016 film adaptation starred Gemma Arterton and Glenn Close. The Boy on the Bridge, Fellside, Someone Like Me, and The Book of Koli trilogy continued his exploration of speculative fiction. The Rampart trilogy (The Book of Koli, The Trial of Koli, The Fall of Koli) is set in a far-future England overrun by bioengineered vegetation.
