Madhumita Murgia is a British-Indian journalist and author who serves as the AI Editor of the Financial Times — the first person to hold that title at the paper. She grew up in Mumbai, studied Biology at the University of Oxford, worked on AIDS vaccine research, and earned a Master's degree in Science Journalism from New York University.... She was previously tech editor at The Telegraph and associate editor of Wired UK. Her book Code Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping the lives of ordinary people around the world — not the tech executives building it, but the gig workers, doctors, parents, activists, and refugees affected by automated decision-making. Drawing on reporting from nine countries, the book was shortlisted for the 2024 Women's Prize for Non-Fiction and has been praised for centring human stories in a debate too often dominated by technical abstractions. Murgia won Science & Technology Journalist of the Year at the UK Press Awards in both 2024 and 2025 for her reporting on generative AI.
