Margaret Atwood is a Canadian author, poet, and literary critic whose extraordinary body of work has made her one of the most important and influential writers in the English language. Over a career spanning more than six decades, she has produced novels, poetry, short stories, essays, and graphic novels that explore power, gender, technology, ecology, and the human capacity for both cruelty and resilience.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario in 1939, Atwood grew up in rural northern Ontario and Quebec, where her father, an entomologist, conducted field research. She studied at Victoria College, University of Toronto, and Radcliffe College, Harvard. She published her first poetry collection in 1961 and her first novel, The Edible Woman, in 1969.
Her novels have ranged across literary fiction, speculative fiction, and historical fiction โ often blending genres in ways that defy easy categorisation. The Handmaid's Tale, published in 1985, is her most famous work: a dystopian novel set in the theocratic Republic of Gilead, where women are stripped of all rights and forced into reproductive servitude. The novel has become a cultural touchstone, its imagery and language adopted by feminist movements worldwide. The sequel, The Testaments (2019), won the Booker Prize (shared with Bernardine Evaristo) and renewed global interest in the Gilead universe. The Hulu television adaptation has been a critical and ratings success.
Other major novels include Cat's Eye, The Blind Assassin (winner of the Booker Prize in 2000), Oryx and Crake, The Year of the Flood, Alias Grace, and The Robber Bride. Her MaddAddam trilogy is one of the most significant works of speculative fiction of the twenty-first century.
Atwood is also a prolific essayist, a witty and active presence on social media, and a tireless advocate for environmental causes, human rights, and freedom of expression.
The audiobook editions of Atwood's novels are excellent, with narrators including Claire Danes delivering performances that capture the intelligence and emotional complexity of her prose. The Handmaid's Tale audiobook has become one of the most listened-to literary audiobooks of all time.
Margaret Atwood lives in Toronto. Her books and audiobooks represent over sixty years of fearless, inventive, and profoundly humane storytelling โ a body of work that has changed the way we think about literature, power, and the future.
