Marguerite Duras was a French novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and filmmaker, and one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. Born in French Indochina in 1914, her experiences in Southeast Asia profoundly shaped her work. The Easy Life is an early novel that displays the spare, emotionally intense prose style that would define her career, telling the story of a young woman's moral and emotional awakening in rural France. Duras is best known for The Lover, which won the Prix Goncourt, and for her screenplay for Hiroshima Mon Amour. She died in 1996. Her audiobooks and books remain essential for readers and listeners who appreciate modernist literature at its most luminous and emotionally devastating.
