Mark Billingham is a bestselling British crime writer, stand-up comedian, and actor whose Tom Thorne series has established him as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed crime novelists in the UK. His books combine taut, twisting plots with dark humour, authentic London settings, and a compelling central character.
Born in Birmingham in 1961, Billingham studied drama at the University of Birmingham and initially pursued a career in entertainment, working as a stand-up comedian and actor. He appeared in television shows including Maid Marian and Her Merry Men and performed stand-up at venues across the UK before turning to crime fiction.
Sleepyhead (2001) introduced Detective Inspector Tom Thorne, a stubborn, music-loving London detective who takes cases personally and bends rules when he believes justice requires it. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and the series — which includes Scaredy Cat, Lazybones, The Burning Girl, Lifeless, Buried, Death Message, Bloodline, and many more — now spans over twenty books. Thorne is one of the most fully realised detectives in contemporary British crime fiction, a flawed, human character whose personal life is as compelling as the cases he investigates.
Billingham has also written standalone thrillers including In the Dark and Rush of Blood, and the series was adapted for television with David Morrissey as Thorne.
He continues to perform comedy and has appeared at literary festivals and comedy venues, often combining both careers. He is a member of the band The Fun Lovin' Crime Writers alongside fellow crime authors Val McDermid, Chris Brookmyre, Doug Johnstone, and Luca Veste.
The audiobook editions of Billingham's novels are brilliantly paced, with narrators capturing the tension, the dark humour, and the authentic London atmosphere of his writing. His books and audiobooks are essential for crime fiction fans who want smart, gripping thrillers with real wit and a detective you can't help caring about.
