Martha Wells is an American science fiction and fantasy author whose Murderbot Diaries series has made her one of the most beloved and awarded writers in modern science fiction. The series — featuring a socially anxious, media-obsessed, part-organic security construct who calls itself Murderbot — is one of the most original, entertaining, and surprisingly moving creations in recent genre fiction. Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1964, Wells studied Anthropology at Texas A&M University. She published her first novel, The Element of Fire, in 1993 and spent over two decades building a respected career in fantasy fiction, including the Raksura series and the Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy. But it was the Murderbot Diaries that brought her the wide readership and recognition her work had long deserved. All Systems Red, the first Murderbot novella, was published in 2017 and won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards. The story introduces SecUnit — a security robot with organic components who has hacked its own governance module and gained free will, but would really rather just watch TV shows than deal with humans. When its client group is threatened, Murderbot reluctantly steps up to protect them while trying to avoid too much social interaction. The series has expanded to include multiple novellas and novels — Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, Exit Strategy, Network Effect (which won the Hugo for Best Novel), and Fugitive Telemetry. Each instalment deepens Murderbot's character, exploring themes of autonomy, identity, trauma, and what it means to be a person when you're not quite sure you are one. What makes the Murderbot Diaries special is their voice. Murderbot's sardonic, anxious, secretly compassionate narration is utterly distinctive and has resonated with readers who see their own social anxiety and desire for autonomy reflected in this unlikely hero. The audiobook editions of the Murderbot Diaries are excellent, with narrator Kevin R. Free delivering a performance that perfectly captures Murderbot's dry wit and hidden vulnerability. The audiobooks have been widely praised and are a hugely popular way to experience the series. Martha Wells lives in Texas. Her books and audiobooks are essential for anyone who wants science fiction that is smart, funny, deeply humane, and stars the most relatable non-human protagonist in modern fiction.
