Michael Bond was a British author who created Paddington Bear — one of the most beloved characters in children's literature. Born in Newbury, Berkshire, in 1926, he wrote the first Paddington story in 1958 after buying a small toy bear near Paddington Station. A Bear Called Paddington is the first book in the series — introducing the... marmalade-loving bear from Darkest Peru who is adopted by the Brown family. Paddington has become a cultural icon, starring in a hugely successful film series, and the books have been translated into over 40 languages. Bond died in 2017.
