Michael Wood is a British crime fiction author and journalist best known for his DCI Matilda Darke series, set in his home city of Sheffield. His novels combine taut plotting, authentic police procedure, and a compelling central character with genuine emotional depth. Born and raised in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Wood worked as a... journalist covering crime stories throughout the city — experience that gave him first-hand knowledge of police procedure and the realities of criminal investigation. He also worked as a proofreader before becoming a full-time author, and now lives in Newcastle in the northeast of England. The DCI Matilda Darke series follows Detective Chief Inspector Matilda Darke, a Sheffield detective dealing with the aftermath of a kidnapping case that went tragically wrong, while investigating new and increasingly dark crimes. The series began with For Reasons Unknown (2015) and has grown to over twelve novels, including Outside Looking In, A Room Full of Killers, Stolen Children, Time Is Running Out, and Below Ground. Darke is a complex, damaged, and deeply human protagonist whose personal struggles add emotional weight to the procedural investigations. Wood has also written standalone psychological thrillers, several of which have been published as Audible Originals, including The Seventh Victim and Vengeance Is Mine. More recently, he has begun a new series featuring Dr Olivia Winter. His writing is characterised by its pace, its authentic Sheffield settings, and its willingness to put its characters through genuine emotional and physical danger.
