Michelle Paver is a British author whose atmospheric, deeply researched novels span historical fiction, fantasy, and horror. She is best known for the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness — a bestselling children's fantasy series set in prehistoric Europe — and for her superbly chilling ghost stories for adults. Born in Nyasaland (now Malawi)... in 1960, Paver grew up in Wimbledon, London. She studied Biochemistry at the University of Oxford before working as a partner in a City of London law firm — a career she eventually left to write full-time. The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, beginning with Wolf Brother (2004), follows Torak and his wolf companion through the forests of prehistoric Northern Europe. The six-book series — Wolf Brother, Spirit Walker, Soul Eater, Outcast, Oath Breaker, and Ghost Hunter — sold over three million copies and was praised for its meticulous research into Stone Age life, its vivid natural settings, and its powerful storytelling. The Viper's Daughter, Skin Taker, and Wolfbane continued the story. Paver's adult fiction has earned her a different kind of acclaim. Dark Matter (2010) — a ghost story set in an Arctic expedition in 1937 — is widely regarded as one of the finest supernatural novels of recent decades. Thin Air (2016), set on a 1930s Himalayan climbing expedition, was equally chilling. Wakenhyrst (2019) explored witchcraft and madness in Edwardian Suffolk. Paver is known for her extraordinary commitment to research — she has visited the Arctic, the Himalayas, and remote forests to ensure the authenticity of her settings.
