Mikhail Bulgakov was a Russian novelist, playwright, and short story writer who is one of the most important figures in twentieth-century Russian literature. Born in Kyiv in 1891, he trained as a doctor before turning to writing. His masterpiece The Master and Margarita was published decades after his death.
