N.K. Jemisin is an American science fiction and fantasy author who has made history as the only person ever to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years in a row — an extraordinary achievement that cemented her reputation as one of the most important voices in contemporary speculative fiction. Born Nora Keita Jemisin in Iowa City, Iowa in 1972, she grew up in New York City and Mobile, Alabama. She studied Psychology at Tulane University and earned a master's degree in Education from the University of Maryland. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a counselling psychologist. Her debut novel, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, was published in 2010 and was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Awards. The Inheritance Trilogy, which it launched, reimagines divine mythology with a focus on power, oppression, and resistance — themes that run through all of Jemisin's work. The Broken Earth trilogy — The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky — is her masterpiece and the work that won those three consecutive Hugo Awards (2016, 2017, 2018). Set on a supercontinent plagued by catastrophic seismic events, the trilogy follows orogenes — people with the ability to control seismic forces — who are feared, enslaved, and oppressed by the society they protect. Written partly in the second person and featuring a narrative structure that reveals its secrets gradually, the trilogy is both formally innovative and emotionally devastating. Jemisin's writing is characterised by its ambition, its anger, and its refusal to look away from the realities of oppression and resistance. Her world-building is extraordinary — her societies feel lived-in and complex, their systems of power horrifyingly recognisable. She writes fantasy that is explicitly about race, colonialism, and systemic injustice, and she does so without ever sacrificing narrative excitement or emotional power. The audiobook editions of the Broken Earth trilogy are superb, with narration that captures the intensity and emotional range of Jemisin's prose. The audiobooks are a powerful way to experience these landmark novels. N.K. Jemisin lives in New York City. Her books and audiobooks are essential for anyone who wants speculative fiction that is formally daring, politically urgent, and deeply, unforgettably human.
